Founded in 1983 by the Yonsei University Health System, Gangnam Severance Hospital was established to expand access to high-quality medical services in the Gangnam district of Seoul—an area that previously lacked advanced healthcare infrastructure.

Since its opening, the hospital has built a reputation for clinical excellence and medical innovation. Milestones include Korea’s first spine surgery using chemonucleolysis in 1984, the country’s first successful lung transplant in 1996, the first muscular cell transplant for a patient with a refractory muscle disorder in 1999, and the first successful surgery for enterobrosia in a premature infant weighing just 630g in 2003.
